Soup Series Part 2 - Split Pea in the Instant Pot

Split Pea Soup

I looked at a few recipes online to get some ideas of how to make this. Here is what I did.

butter

onions

carrots

garlic cloves

smoked pork neck bones, ham hocks, or ham bones, if in a pinch, use some bacon or salt pork

green split peas

chicken broth

ham base

thyme

bay leaves

salt & pepper

Minced carrot and then onion in food processor. Sauteed in instant pot with 3 T butter and a little salt. Sauteed until softened, not browned. Add two cloves grated garlic, cook another minute. Then add in chicken broth, green split peas that have been picked over and rinsed, thyme, bay leaves, and smoked pork neck bones, ham hocks or a ham bone. Cook under pressure for 1 hour. Remove bones and bay leaves. Add diced ham, and a little bit of ham base (optional). Season with salt and pepper. This was AMAZING. If you prefer the peas to not be all mush and blended in, reserve some and add at the end and cook under pressure probably 10 or 15 minutes more.
